Using Formative and Summative Assessment in Writing

Formative Assessment
We use formative assessment to guide our next steps with students and with the class.  Below is a form created to note students successes and next steps as a writer.  The criteria listed at the top was compiled from our District Standards, Districs Writing Continuum, 6 Traits, and experience working with young writers.  We use the top half for quick glances and the bottom half for conferences with the student.

Summative Assessment
We use summative assessment to track student progress with students.  Students and teacher create the rubrics or criteria for success.  At the end of the day, week, or unit, students first self-assess their writing using the rubric.  Then the teacher evaluates the students writing and provides descriptive feedback for the student.  With all rubrics, students are aware of what is on the rubric (most times seeing the actual rubric) before the start of the writing period (day, week, or unit).
