First grade students daily:

·         actively engage in strategy group instruction (comprehension, accuracy, fluency, word work)

·         confer with teacher about reading strategy use (occasionally) (comprehension, accuracy, fluency, word work)

·         read along to books on CD, tape, and computer (fluency, enjoyment)

·         listen to stories read aloud (fluency, comprehension, enjoyment)

·         participate in repeated shared reading experiences (fluency, comprehension, word work, enjoyment)

·         read to a buddy (fluency, accuracy, comprehension, enjoyment)

·         read to self (fluency, accuracy, comprehension, enjoyment)

·         engage in whole group mini lessons (comprehension, accuracy, fluency, word work, genre study, author study)

Our reading block contains:


·         1 or more mini-lessons

·         Shared Reading

·         1 or more Read Alouds

·         3-5 Reading Rotations

·         Teacher confers with students 1-on-1 or works in strategy groups

·         Students choose between: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Read Along, Word Work, and Work on Writing
